JobSeeker Increase with Dr Shawn Leu

The federal government has recently announced changes to Centrelink payments that will take place from September of this year.

These changes will see over one million Australians on welfare payments, like JobSeeker and Youth Allowance, receiving an additional $40 a fortnight.

We sat down with Dr Shawn Leu, a Senior Lecturer in macroeconomics here at UNE, to discuss how these changes could affect the Australian economy.

“25 years ago, JobSeeker was pretty much in line with Aged Pension, and since then has declined substantially, so now it’s about two-thirds of the Age Pension and only 40% of the minimum wage.”
